Very Ethical Protein for Millions: Thousands x Less Land for the Same Nutrition
Releasing 29 August 2025 – Current agriculture is stressing the planet in unbelievable ways: soil degradation, water pollution, carbon dioxide emissions and biodiversity loss. But imagine: using thousands of times less land and water than current agricultural practices to produce the same proteins and oils.[1] Imagine a person getting enough very ethical protein without the bulk of enough pulses or the solvents of protein isolate. The technology of microbial agriculture is currently deploying commercially but we need to speed up its adoption.[2] Some good news is there is currently a five-year one billion-Euro plan to scale up protein production in Finland using only air and electricity.[3] The truth is this would provide an equivalent of a daily 40 grams of protein to 2.7 million people.[4]
We need to take this idea further, like many times the size of current plans, ramping up in North America because there are several jurisdictions that generate more than 95% of their electricity from renewable energy.[5] We need to have even more calls for power to build more renewable electrical generation and put it to this good use. This technology produces a lot of protein but requires a lot of electricity.[6] We need to provide education in microbial agriculture. We need a government taskforce on microbial agriculture. What we’re looking for from you is to look into this website enough to satisfy yourself that this is real, and then agreement that we need to think bigger. We’re also looking for whether you want to form a community dedicated to laying the groundwork for the economy to work well to address the shortfall on an expeditious timeline. If you are interested in being a member of a new group People for Scale Up of Microbial Agriculture, please click here.
[1] This takes into account the increased land use of meat production.

[4] 50,000 tonnes of Solein per year at 78% protein works out to 39,000,000 kg of protein per year or 106,849 kg of protein per day. This amounts to 2.67 million people per day at 40 grams of protein per day
[5] Newfoundland and Labrador, PEI, Quebec, Manitoba, B.C., and Yukon each generate over 95% of their electricity from renewable sources: CER – Canada’s Renewable Power – Canada
[6] The proposed factory complex of Solar Foods requires 270 Mw of electricity for 50,000 tonnes per year of Solein, which works out to 39,000 tonnes per year of protein. This works out approximately to the electricity of a 100 watt lightbulb continuously operating for 40 grams of protein per day. It also works out to (270Mw x 24 hours x 365 days = 2,365 gigawatt-hours) per year, or about 3.3% of BC’s total annual electricity production of 71.7 terawatt-hours. It works out to 1.1% of Quebec’s total annual electricity production of 212.9 terawatt-hours.
